Santa Cruz Wharf centennial celebration slated for Saturday

The Santa Cruz Wharf is turning 100 this year and the city is starting the celebrations Saturday with a slate of events that includes a fireworks show.

Starting at 10 a.m., there will be a community procession, followed by a toast and live music by the Kuumbwa Jazz Honors Band, The Parafins, Wally’s Swing World and more.

Fireworks will start at 9 p.m.

Free trolley service will be offered between downtown and the Wharf, and free bike valet services also will be offered.

The full schedule for Saturday as well as other upcoming events celebrating the iconic wharf is online here.

The existing wharf, built in 1914, is actually the sixth wharf to be in that location. The previous wharfs — the Cowell Wharf, the Gharky Wharf, the Railroad Wharf, the Connecting Wharf, and the Pleasure Pier — could not serve deep-water ships.
