Jodi Arias no longer wants to represent herself

Jodi Arias no longer wants to represent herself in the upcoming second penalty phase in her murder case.

In a motion filed Wednesday, Arias’ attorneys write that their client seeks to relinquish her right to serve as her own attorney, effective immediately.

A judge granted Arias’ previous request to represent herself, while keeping her two court-appointed attorneys on as advisers. If the judge approves Wednesday’s motion, those two lawyers will again take lead.

The retrial is set for Sept. 29.

Arias, a native of Salinas, was convicted of murder last year in the 2008 killing of her ex-boyfriend, but jurors couldn’t decide on a sentence. While the conviction stands, a second and final penalty phase is set to determine whether she gets life in prison or the death penalty.
