Testicular cancer survivor raising awareness coast to coast

A 31-year-old testicular cancer survivor is passing through the central coast this week as part of his national tour to raise awareness and support for young men’s health issues.

Thomas Cantley, a native of Canada who grew up on the Central Coast, is pushing a six-foot inflatable “testicle” across the country, from Santa Monica to New York.

He kicked off his journey on Sept. 4 and expects to reach New York in October. This week, he will be rolling through Monterey, Salinas and Carmel.

He also plans to stop in Atlanta, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Miami, Nashville, Salt Lake City, Santa Fe, and Washington, D.C.

“I want to prove you don’t need billions of dollars or the promise of a cure to make a difference in the fight against cancer,” Cantley said in a press release. “I also want to prove community is built on compassion and kindness. As I push the ball across the country I will not have a cent at my disposal. I am relying on the help of strangers I meet along the way.”

Cantley was diagnosed with and treated for stage 3 testicular cancer at the age of 27. Now he works to raise support and awareness through his organization, Be Ballsy. Follow his journey on Twitter and Facebook.
