Solar project in city of Santa Cruz surpasses first-year goal

A solar project in the city of Santa Cruz has surpassed its first-year goals, city officials said.

Just one year after implementation, the city’s Solar One project is saving energy and reducing costs at city facilities.

In 2013, solar anopies were constructed in the Santa Cruz Police Department and City Hall parking lots. The Solar One project completed its first full year of generation this spring, totaling 685,000 kWh for the two buildings.

City officials estimate the project will save more than $4 million in energy costs and eliminate 5,000 tons of greenhouse gases during the 25 year life of the system.

For more information about the project, visit the city’s website.
