Recreational trail from Monterey to Pacific Grove gets temporary solution

The recreational trail from Monterey to Pacific Grove is getting a temporary solution that’s expected to help defuse tensions between bicyclists and walkers.

Pacific Grove’s city manager said the paint has been ordered for the temporary signage and markings on the trail. The markings will tell pedestrians where to walk and where not to, and tell cyclists which side of the trail to stay on.

Right now, the trail is marked but apparently it’s not clear enough for those who use it. Many complaints about right-of-way have led to the city stepping in and making some moves that it said should help for now, until the Traffic Advisory Commission can come up with a more permanent solution.

“The Traffic Safety Commission has asked staff to paint a temporary line on the right side of the paved portion of the trail, as well as install three sets of temporary signs on the trail just requesting people to be more watchful and mindful of other users of the trail,” said city manager Tom Frutchey.

Frutchey said he expects to have the temporary signage installed no later than next week. The city is making these fixes, which are only temporary, to help with the right-of-way conflict.

The Traffic Advisory Commission still needs to hold a hearing to come up with more permanent solutions, which the city said is still a back-and-forth discussion at this time.
