Two arrested after stabbing near San Lorenzo Park in Santa Cruz

Two people were arrested early Saturday morning in connection with a stabbing near San Lorenzo Park.

Santa Cruz police responded to a local emergency room for reports of a stabbing victim. The 28-year-old Hayward resident was stabbed in the abdomen and had to undergo surgery immediately.

Witnesses were located and taken to the location of the stabbing. They told police the victim was walking through the park around 2:30 a.m. when he was contacted by three suspects.

The suspects questioned the victim regarding his red flannel shirt, asking if he had any gang affiliations. The victim and witnesses denied any gang affiliation but the victim was still assaulted and stabbed.

Witnesses identified 23-year-old Alex Reyes as the person who stabbed the victim. Juan Cruz, 30, was identified as having been involved.

Reyes and Cruz were booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The victim underwent surgery and was in stable condition.
