San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputy shoots, kills 18-year-old

San Mateo County Sheriff’s officials say a deputy shot and killed an 18-year-old girl after responding to a report of an armed and violent person.

The shooting at a housing complex in Half Moon Bay occurred around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Rosenblatt said the deputy opened fire after fearing for his life.

One witness, 12-year-old Dyanna Ruiz, told the San Francisco Chronicle she saw a girl running toward the deputy with something in her hand. She said the deputy yelled at the girl and opened fire when she kept coming at him.

Sheriff’s officials have not identified the victim or said whether she was armed.
