Morgan Hill high school students prep for unity during Cinco de Mayo protest

On Sunday, the Morgan Hill Police Department said it’s stepping up patrols amid talks of a controversial protest near Live Oak High School on Monday’s Cinco de Mayo holiday. This comes after several families in Morgan Hill sued the school district after a group of students were told to turn their American flag t-shirts inside out or go home in 2010.

On Sunday the Morgan Hill Unified School District put a video up on YouTube.com showing students prepping for unity on campus on Monday.

“We want them to know that the incident that occurred in 2010, happened in the past and we want them to know we are beyond that,” said a Live Oak High School senior in the video.

A recent federal appeals court ruled in favor of the school’s decision. The court said concerns of racial violence outweighed students’ freedom of expression rights. Opponents plan on picketing in front of the high school.
