Highway 101 Back Open After Hours of Clean-up of Tanker Spill

Southbound lanes of Highway 101 were back open just before 3 p.m. Thursday after an all day clean-up effort.

A a gasoline tanker overturned on Highway 101 near Tennant Avenue overnight Thursday morning.

Two of the southbound lanes re-opened at about 10:30 a.m. but clean-up continued until the afternoon.

The accident was reported about 1 a.m. and CALFIRE estimates about 1,200 gallons of fuel spilled onto the highway. It took hours for the rest of the fuel to be removed from the truck which was partially on the shoulder and partially on the southbound lane.

Fumes from the gas led to evacuations of nearby homes as a precaution and cleanup was hampered by the rain which spread the gas. Crews used a dike to block the fuel and absorbing pads to skim off the gas.
