Drone-Like Video Technology Flys High Above Pebble Beach

Golf spectators in Pebble Beach may see new technology flying above the famed 18-hole course this week. Perfect Shot Productions based in Las Vegas is on location after it’s team was hired by the PGA Tour to test it’s new unmanned aerial camera.

It’s affectionately nicknamed “Miley” as in pop superstar Miley Cyrus.

The lightweight UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) is making it’s first visit to Pebble Beach. It’s rather small and can be carried by one person prior to take-off.

Operators tell Central Coast News it’s drone system is equipped with an HD Sony camera and can travel at 45 miles per hour. According to the Perfect Shot team, their UAV can also fly in 20 mph winds.

Brett Kanda with Perfect Shot Productions tells KION, “The most important part is how stable the footage is because that’s all the really matters.”

The set-up is estimated to cost $20,000.

Miley will not be flying past Tuesday over the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament. The flights are nothing more than a test – to see if the PGA Tour or possible broadcast stations like CBS will consider using the aerial footage for future events.

Perfect Shot Productions captured images above all 18 holes along Pebble and wide views above the Lodge. The team had additional plans of shooting video and photos above Spyglass and Monterey Peninsula Country Club on Monday afternoon.

The UAV can fly for 15 minutes per battery.

The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am officially begins on Thursday with first round action. Nashville-native Brandt Snedeker won in 2013.

4-Time Champion Phil Mickelson is among the long list of pro players returning for the 2014 Pro-Am. Celebrities include actors Andy Garcia and Kurt Russell – along with NFL Quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.
