Possible Shooting in Santa Cruz Deemed A Hoax

The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department said on Thursday night someone called 911 to report a shooting that ended up being a hoax.

Deputies said the fake report, sometimes referred to as swatting, came from a phone number they were not able to trace back. However, deputies said the last person to use the number is somehow affiliated with UC Santa Cruz.

A deputy said the call was taken by a 3 rd party line and translated to say something like, “someone’s been shot and shooter says he’s going to continue shooting until everyone’s dead.”

The sheriff’s department, California Highway Patrol, Capitola Police and local fire departments all responded to the call at 650 34 th Street in Santa Cruz. Deputies said no one was located at that address where a house is vacant and under construction. Officers also checked on another home at 350 34 th Street.
