Bixby Bridge Closed After Fatal Accident Sunday

California Highway Patrol is currently investigating a fatal accident that involved a car driving off Bixby Bridge in Big Sur Sunday morning.

At one point both sides of the bridge on Highway One were closed down, but authorities have since opened up the highway.

CHP says there were two people involved in the wreck, a man and a woman. Right now authorities aren’t sure how, but the car went over the edge of the bridge into the water. The woman in the car died while the male was airlifted out to a Bay Area hospital.

CHP also says somehow both of the victims were 200 feet away from the car when they were found. The car was ripped in half and it took emergency crews several hours to get the car out of the water. The recovery efforts were then hindered due to heavy fog in the area.
