NY Tappan Zee bridge demolished

A big chunk of the old Tappan Zee Bridge across the Hudson upriver from New York City went down in New York history Tuesday (1/15).

The demolition with explosives removed the eastern part of the structure between Westchester and Rockland counties. There are plans to dismantle the western portion of the bridge without explosives sometime later this year.

The Tappan Zee Bridge has been replaced by the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge to carry Interstate 87 traffic over the Hudson River.

The bridge opened in 1955 and became a poster child for America’s crumbling infrastructure.

The bridge is about 30 miles north of New York City.
