Bomb squad detonates home-made explosive device in Hollister
UPDATE: 1/11/2019 5:50 p.m. Friday morning, a home-made bomb was found inside a Hollister apartment, and the man, who officials believe made it, is still missing.
San Benito County Sheriff’s Office did a search of 31-year-old Ansley Godoy’s apartment, where he lived with his mom. This came after a traffic stop that led police to believe that Godoy was selling narcotics.
“D uring the search of the property, they came across what they believe to be some explosive devices. We backed out of the apartment and called the Monterey county Bomb Squad,” said Captain Eric Taylor with San Benito County Sheriff’s Office.
The Monterey County Bomb Squad brought in a robot to safely remove one explosive device from the apartment and search for other evidence that would prove Godoy’s intentions. One bomb was detonated and another was disarmed. Five other devices were scanned and shown not to be explosive. These items were found in the suspect’s bedroom, where a seemingly unknowing mother was only feet away.
“It’s an adult son. Everything’s confined to his bedroom. It’s hard to say whether or not she knew what he’s been involved in,” said Taylor.
San Benito County officials said they were told Godoy is out of town and believed to be in the Modesto area. The unknown only adds to neighbors’ unrest. “Whenever you hear anything like that, it obviously comes as a shock. Especially in this small little town,” said neighbor, Alfredo Ramirez.
To others, the incident didn’t come as a surprise. “I n today ‘s society, not really. I’m kind of surprised it happened here, but it did. There’s bomb makers all over the place,” said neighbor, Richard Corona.
The San Benito County Sheriff’s Office said they are currently working with other agencies to track down Godoy. “We really need to get our hands on him to found out why it was that he was making these devices inside of his house. At this point, we have no idea why,” said Taylor.
