Portion of Bay Street in Santa Cruz shut down after police locate a landslide

Santa Cruz Police shut down a portion of Bay Street after what was an initial report of a downed tree in the area turned out to be a landslide.

It happened near Nobel Drive where Bay turns into Bay Street on Sunday evening.

It was there Police found evidence of a landslide with debris stretching across both lanes of Bay Street.

“This is obviously a fairly traveled street for people heading to work or school,” says Santa Cruz Police Sgt. Jon Bush. “We had to let everyone know this stretch of road was closed until further notice.

Monday morning, crews began showing up from the city to assess the damage. They described it as “not as bad as previously thought.”

It was dark on the street Sunday night when the initial call went out so crews wanted to wait until morning to do any work.

As far as the work is concerned, it may be completed by Monday afternoon, however there are still other concerns which the city and police are trying to keep in mind.

“It just depends on the structure and integrity of the embankment and further surroundings to see if vehicles will be allowed to safely travel through,” says Sgt. Bush.

Residents on the hill above where the landslide took place weren’t told of any dangers they’d face if they stayed in their homes.

The city has already notified any bus routes that go through the area that the street is closed for the time being.

Santa Cruz Police say so far they have no reports of anyone being injured in the landslide.
