Chinatown structure fire extinguished
UPDATE 10/7/2018 6:45 p.m. A fire in Chinatown has been extinguished after crews worked on it for about an hour.
Battalion Chief Scott Myhre with Salinas Fire says they responded to a report of smoke near Soledad and Market Way.
They think the fire started in grass outside the building and spread to the back of the structure.
Crews are still investigating the cause, but they say that it is likely carelessness from cooking, a cigarette or something similar.
There was nobody inside, but the structure is no longer stable.
It had been vacant for years, so crews did most of their work outside.
The city and the owner will decide what will happen to the building.
