Trick roper attempts to break Guinness World Record

Trick roper and Gun spinner Will Roberts is attempting to break a Guinness World Record for the most people in a spinning lasso at the California Rodeo Salinas.

Roberts worked with rodeo officials to gather a group of people on the track at the Salinas Sports Complex on Thursday, July 19th. Roberts then started spinning his rope and was able to keep it going for the required amount of time with 13 people inside the lasso.

The previous world record was ten people.

Roberts told KION he had been planning this world record attempt for nine months. He was required to fill out 4 ½ pages of paperwork and document the entire event properly on camera.

Roberts already has one world record for the most times to holster and unholster a gun in one minute. Roberts claimed that with 44 times in a minute.

Roberts is now hoping he can claim another world record, but he said the weather may make things challenging.

“I forgot about the wind here in Salinas, the Salinas Valley, I might be the trick roper that does the largest cowboy kite that wraps around everybody’s head, but I have rope burn insurance so we’re good.”

Roberts said he came up with the idea to break this world record because he has been called the modern day Will Rogers.

“I’m trying to emulate a lot of the stuff Will did and one of the things he did was he was well known for throwing a big loop around a lot of people. I’ve done it many times before, but it is usually families, moms and dads and kids so I don’t have any five foot kids so we’re going to do the best we can and get er done,” said Will Roberts.

Each person in the lasso had to be at least five feet tall.

Roberts will now have to wait for the Guinness World Records to make it official.
