Salinas man gets 18 years in prison for Chinatown murder

UPDATE; 2/2/2018 3:50 p.m. A Salinas man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for killing a 26-year-old man in Chinatown.

According to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, while collecting a drug debt on August 25, 2015, David Smith struck Tyler Webb in the face causing him to fall to the ground, hitting his head and eventually dying from the incident.

Smith was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, battery with serious bodily injury and assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury, and causing great bodily injury.

“While he was awaiting trial, he attempted to dissuade a major witness in the case from testifying by threats of bodily harm,” said DA’s Office.

Smith was also convicted of dissuading a witness from testifying. He had been released on bail when he threatened the witness.

UPDATE 9/2/15: Salinas Police are revealing the name of a man accused of killing a 26-year-old man in Chinatown last week.

Police said Davion Smith, 42, was arrested for allegedly assaulting Tyler Webb, leaving him with a major head injury. Webb later died at the hospital.

Investigators said Smith is homeless and frequently sleeps in Chinatown.

PREVIOUS STORY: Salinas officers have made an arrest in the killing of a 26-year-old man last week in Chinatown.

Officers said Tyler Webb was found with a major head injury on Soledad St. around 10:10 p.m. Tuesday. Webb died later at the hospital.

Police are not naming the person arrested yet.
