Coast Guard suspends search for man in water near Asilomar State Beach

UPDATE: 2/2/2018 9:33 a.m. The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a reported person in the water near Asilomar Beach in Monterey.

On Wednesday witnesses said they saw a person in the water waiving for help around 5:16 p.m.

Crews searched the waters for about 20 hours, covering 116 square miles.

“Although the missing person’s identity is unknown, we appreciate the prompt report made by a good Samaritan that allowed emergency response agencies to launch a search,” said Cmdr. Jennifer Stockwell, the search-and-rescue mission controller for the case.

The Coast Guard continues to search for a man missing in the water near Asilomar State Beach.

According to Monterey County Communications, a man was seen in the water waving his arms and trying to call for help Wednesday around 5:16 p.m.

Witnesses said the man was wearing a white shirt with orange accents.

“Watchstanders dispatched crews aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco, a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Monterey, and the Coastal Patrol Boat Coast Guard Cutter Tern from San Francisco Bay,” said Coast Guard officials.

Pacific Grove Police, Monterey Fire and Monterey Police are assisting in the search.

The missing person has not yet been identified.
