Gilroy mayor wants residents to have radar guns
Giving radar guns to residents. That’s the idea of one local city trying to stop speeders in neighborhoods.
It’s an idea the mayor of Gilroy is bringing to the city council.
The mayor is trying to get creative on traffic calming solutions. While people say progress does need to be made, they’re not all sure this is the solution.
“Speeding is happening all over the city and we cannot hire enough police officers just to do enforcement,” said Gilroy Mayor Roland Velasco.
One of his ideas is to arm certain residents with radar guns to track speeders and report them.
“Residents would be able to check out a gun, they would work in pairs,” Velasco said.
Neighbors would track the speeds and then police would take it from there, giving the registered car owner a warning.
“My goal is really to empower residents to take control over speeding in their neighborhoods,” Velasoco said.
