Big rig rolls over, dumps sand on roadway in Santa Cruz Mountains

A big rig transporting sand made a big mess after it rolled over on a roadway in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the 18-wheeler rolled over near E. Zayante Road closing both lanes around 10:38 a.m. Tuesday. An estimated 75-100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into vegetation, a culvert and ultimately Zayante Creek.

The driver is ok and only suffered minor injuries.

CHP said California Fish and Wildlife officials will assess the situation.

The road is expected to remain closed until 4 p.m. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and to take Lompico Road as a detoured route.
