Monterey County Office of Education supports DACA Students

As congress works to find an alternative for DACA recipients the Monterey County Office of Education says they will continue to support parents and students.

The superintendent says parents and students are nervous right now but that staying informed will be their greatest tool. Staying informed is what the superintendent’s office plans to help them do.

It’s been a frightening couple of days for parents and students in Monterey County.

“Those that have been feeling the security and the benefits of DACA are now feeling the sense of unsettledness about what’s going to happen and there is anxiety,” said Dr. Nancy Kotowski, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools.

President Trump’s decision to rescind DACA has left congress to figure out an alternative.

In the meantime 800,000 dreamers are awaiting their fate, including many in Monterey County.

“Our students, have such hopes of what they’re going to do in their life,” Kotwoski said, “Every parent wants the world to be a better place for their child than it was for them and that’s universal throughout the world.”

The Monterey County Office of Education has a migrant services program. In 2015, this region had more than 12,500 migrant students.

“There’s so much support for them, not only for the students but for the parents as well,” Kotowski said.

The superintendent says that during the time congress has to come up with an alternative to DACA they plan on keeping parents and students informed.

“We’re going to be providing workshops and sessions where parents can feel comfortable coming and learning the facts from experts that will be able to give them all of the information that they need,” Kotowski said.

Efforts they hope sends a message to DACA students and parents.

“That they are in good and safe environments where they can thrive and learn and grow and aspire to greatness,” Kotowski said.
