Santa Cruz Police arrest serial groper

A Salinas man has been arrested, after police say he groped several women today on Pacific Avenue.

Santa Cruz Police responded to a call this morning in the 900 block of Pacific Avenue. The first victim told officers 43-year-old Frank Benavidez sexually groped her near the bus station when she fought him off. A second victim said she was walking on the sidewalk when Benavidez grabbed and physically assaulted her. She also attempted to fight him off when he attacked her a second time.

Two good Samaritans intervened when they witnessed the attack. Benavidez then ran across the street and grabbed a third woman from behind. That victim punched and kicked Benavidez, fighting him off. He then pursued another female, threatening to sexually assault her.

When Officers arrived, Benavidez was stopped and arrested for multiple counts of assault with intent to commit rape, sexual battery and false imprisonment.

Benavidez is a recently registered transient sex offender in the City of Santa Cruz.

The department is asking for the public’s help in identifying any additional victims with whom Frank Benavidez may have had contact.
