Concours d’Elegance wraps up at Pebble Beach
Dozens of cars lined the 18th Fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links Sunday for the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The top prize of Best in Show was awarded to a 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer owned by Bruce McCaw of Bellevue, Washington.
Concours d’Elegance brought together an exhibition of excellence all in one place for another year.
“Cars give you everything. It’s the smell, the adrenaline, the feeling and it takes you places,” said Car Owner Danielle Alura.
Nearly 200 out of about 1000 applicants made it to the coveted spot on the 18th fairway and judges said picking out who takes home an award is no easy task.
“It’s not just what is the car that has the most correct and original restoration, it’s also which is the car that has really a visual impact that people will say oh my gosh when they see it and what a beautiful car,” said Concours judge Bob Joynt.
Automobiles are judged based on a 100 point system, which is broken down into 20 different categories. To break a tie, cars can earn bonus points for beauty and if they went on the 70 mile tour down to Big Sur.
“You’re only allowed to bring a car here every 10 years and when you do that it means people, when they buy a ticket to come here, it means they’re going to see a complete new group of cars because you can’t repeat them,” explained Joynt.
Danielle Alura is showcasing a 1955 Alfa Romeo 1900 CSS Buano Coupe Speciale off.
“This is the last one in existence. The judges have been back and we overheard them say this is the best Buano body that they’ve ever seen.”
Car owners and spectators said the event is more than just about who wins though, it’s also about preserving history and friendships.
“The culture, the people, the cars, the passion,” said David Sadek, from San Luis Obispo
All the cars will now be shipped home over the next few days.
