Off-Duty Oakland Firefighters Shooting Suspect Arrested

KPIX– A 27-year-old San Jose man was arrested Friday in a fatal shooting that left one off-duty Oakland firefighter dead and another wounded, police said.

San Jose police said Oliver Juinio was being held on murder and attempted murder charges in the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Jake Walter.

Walker and four other fellow off-duty firefighters had attended an event at Gordon Biersch brewery near San Jose’s Japantown and were leaving late Thursday night when a gunman opened fire.

“They were at an event, exiting the establishment,” Oakland fire Deputy Chief Melinda Drayton told the East Bay Times. “When in what appears to be a random act of violence without provocation, a group of men came up to the group of probationary firefighters. Shots were fired.”

A second firefighter suffered non-life threatening wounds and was in stable condition at Valley Medical Center. He has only been identified as a 26-year-old who had recently graduated from the fire fighting academy in April along with Walker.

The three other firefighters were not injured and assisted the two victims until emergency medical crews arrived.

Juinio fled the scene on foot. An intense manhunt was launched in the surrounding neighborhood and police were able to locate Juinio a short time later. He was taken into custody without incident.

At a news conference, Interim Oakland Fire Chief Darin White said: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, the friends, the loved ones (of Walker).”

The shooting remained under investigation and a motive had yet to be determined.
