Settlement reached for Dick Bruhn Fire

The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office said a settlement has been reached in the environmental protection case involving the former Dick Bruhn building.

The building caught fire in February 2015. The fire caused at least $2 million in damage. It also forced the closure of Main Street for nearly a week.

The Monterey County District Attorney said Berkley, Inc. of Salinas and its President and CEO agreed to pay $75,000 in civil penalties and costs for failing to keep up with regulations regarding asbestos in the building.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Salinas Fire said it wasn’t arson.
