UPDATE: CHP-Santa Cruz identifies suspects in stolen car with bomb on Highway 1

Two people were arrested after being caught with a stolen vehicle and a homemade bomb on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz.

According to the California Highway Patrol, it all started when CHP officers spotted a light colored Honda passing slower traffic on the right shoulder of Highway 1.

Officers pulled over 32-year-old Lorena Muriel Sanchez and 33-year-old Francisco Rosario Valdez Jr on Highway 1 south, near Morrissey Boulevard around 5:36 p.m. Wednesday.

The officers found out the Honda was stolen from San Jose.

Sanchez and Valdez were taken into custody.

As officers did a search of the car they found a homemade destructive device in a backpack inside the passenger compartment of the Honda.

All lanes were closed for about 10 minutes while the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad destroyed the device.

No one was injured during the incident.
