Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau celebrates 100 years

In the heart of the Pajaro Valley, Matt Akiyama is tending to his hops. The young farmer comes from a long line of growers and for him, it’s all a labor of love.

“Watching my grandfather and father work on our carnation nursery growing up was my driving fuel,” said Akiyama. “I just enjoy the outdoors and these hops are pretty amazing. They can grow up to 2 feet a day, so it’s really fun to see them thrive.”

Akiyama’s operation is new, not even two years old yet, but he has got big plans for the future.

“My dream is to have hops as far as you can see out on this property and maybe some more, but I really want to continue to provide local breweries with this local ingredient,” said Akiyama.

Akiyama is not a member of the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau but that doesn’t mean the organization isn’t watching out for him.

“The mission of Farm Bureau is to be representing everyone who has a stake in agriculture and make it an industry that is thriving and healthy for future generations,” said Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau President Tom Broz.

On Thursday, the Farm Bureau celebrated 100 years of existence. Broz said it’s been a century of many accomplishments in a county that credits loads of money to agriculture.

“Agriculture in Santa Cruz County is the number No. 1 economic engine. It generates over $600 million annually and that is not really taking into consideration some of the secondary benefits. The industry is well over a $1 billion,” said Broz.

Broz said the organization will continue to work to be a voice for farmers. Specifically focusing on making sure any labor issues are addressed, groundwater is managed properly and farmland is protected.
