Puppies found under portable classroom in Salinas

The SPCA for Monterey County received a call last week about puppies trapped under a portable classroom at Gavilan View Middle School in Salinas.

According to officials, teachers and students at the school heard crying under the classroom for at least two days.

A custodian and a teacher managed to reach under the building and pull several puppies to safety; the school secretary kept the rescued puppies warm.

SPCA officers rushed the tiny puppies back to the shelter for immediate care. Three puppies survived but two were found dead.

The three tiny puppies now named Gilligan, Skipper and Mary Ann were two weeks old, cold and dehydrated.

Officials said they spent their first night with the SPCA where they were bottle fed and kept warm.

According to the SPCA, a lactating female dog had been trapped at the school and sent to a different shelter five days before the puppies were rescued. The day the mother was trapped was also the day a major storm hit and officials wonder how the puppies survived for five days in storm conditions without her.
