“El Diablo” arrested for machete assault

A machete-wielding man known as “El Diablo” has been arrested for assaulting several homeless people near the Pajaro River, according to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office.

Evarado Ortiz Vargas was arrested Wednesday for assaulting a woman transient on October 17, 2016. Deputies said Vargas demanded money before hitting her in head with a machete. The victim was treated at Natividad Medical Center.

Deputies believe it was the third assault committed by Vargas. He was booked into the Monterey County Jail.
