Annual ‘Great American Shakeout’, a reminder to be prepared

People from all over the country will take part in “The Great American Shakeout” on Thursday. The nationwide earthquake drill is all about preparing you for the “big one.”

Just on Tuesday a 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck 10 miles outside of Hollister, a reminder why it’s important to “drop, cover, and hold on,” the recommended safety action to take during an earthquake. Here are some other tips from the American Red Cross.

* If you are in bed, stay there and hold on. Protect your head with a pillow.

* If you are outside, find a clear spot and drop to the ground. Stay there until the shaking stops.

* If you are in a vehicle, pull over to a clear location and stop.

In the United States, 45 states and territories are at moderate to very high risk of earthquakes.
