Work to begin on water pipeline

Monterey Peninsula majors and business leaders met outside Monterey City Hall Monday to formally kick off construction of a nearly 7-mile pipeline that will deliver water to peninsula cities in early 2018.

The 36″ pipeline will run through sections of Seaside, Monterey, Pacific Grove, and the Presidio of Monterey, and deliver water to California American Water (CalAm) customers from the Pure Water Monterey groundwater replenishment project and aquifer storage project.

CalAm will begin initial construction, including the relocation of some existing water lines, in November. The project is expected to be completed in late 2017.

The project meets a requirement of the state’s Cease and Desist Order on pumping from the Carmel River and is expected to deliver 3,500 acre-feet of water per year.
