Loma Fire crews begin mop up and repair

UPDATE 10/5/16 6:30 PM: Cal Fire said the Loma Fire is 95 percent contained and still sits at 4,474 acres.

UPDATE 10/5/16 9:30 AM: With the Loma Fire now 94% contained, local CAL FIRE Santa Clara Unit has taken over management of the fire that began September 26th in the Santa Cruz mountains.

CAL FIRE is advising people in the area to drive slowly and cautiously as crews, some using heavy equipment, continue to work on the fire that has burned 4,474 acres.

The containment date is October 8, but crews are expected to continue working in the weeks ahead mopping up and removing fire equipment.

UPDATE 10/4/16 9:37 AM: All evacuation orders for the Loma Fire are lifted, effective at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

UPDATE 10/4/16 7:38 AM: Cal Fire officials say the Loma Fire is now 90 percent contained at 4,474 acres.

PREVIOUS STORY: The expected containment date for the Loma Fire has been pushed back to Saturday, October 8.

A Cal Fire official tells KION’s Matt Sizemore the fire is now 81 percent contained. Bryan Martin, Public Information Officer with Cal Fire, says the fire is no longer actively burning, but numerous hot spots remain.

“There’s still a lot of work to do,” said Martin.
