SPCA shelters over 30 evacuated pets

UPDATE 7/27/2016 5:50 PM: The SPCA for Monterey County has taken in 34 animals displaced by the Soberanes Fire. They include 18 cats, four dogs, four baby turkeys, three horses, two parakeets, one tarantula, one king snake and a leopard gecko. The organization has also helped evacuate or provide assistance to more 50 animals.

The SPCA is seeking cash donations and gifts of pet food and litter. The SPCA is located at 1002 Monterey-Salinas Highway.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Soberanes fire isn’t just affecting area residents, but their pets as well. While the fire has been devastating to so many residents in the Big Sur area, their pets are just as scared.

Fortunately, that’s where the spca for monterey county has stepped in. It’s providing shelter to 20 evacuated pets, mostly cats and a few dogs, and a handful of exotic animals. Pet owners can visit the SPCA at its main location off Highway 68, or at they can bring their pets to the emergency evacuation center at Carmel Middle School.

“We’re there to meet with the public and find out if they have housing lined up. We give recommendations for housing. We’ve been giving supplies to owners, and in some cases owners don’t have a place where they can take their pets, so that’s how, that’s where we come in to provide that temporary sheltering when people are displaced and can’t take their pets with them,” says Scott Delucchi, Executive Director of the SPCA for Monterey County.

Delucchi says pet owners who haven’t been evacuated should be wary of the heavy smoke that’s covering the central coast. Treat your pet the same way you would treat yourself or your child. If you wouldn’t be outside running due to the smoke, neither should your pet.

The SPCA for Monterey County is offering this help at no cost to those who’ve been evacuated, but of course that doesn’t mean there’s no cost to the shelter. If you’d like to help, feel free to donate at the shelter, their station at Carmel Middle School, or to find out more, head to this link:
