New pizza spot opens in Lighthouse District of Monterey

The Lighthouse District in Monterey is becoming a popular spot for new restaurants.

“It’s just a really good location and in the restaurant business it’s all about location,” said business owner Danica Alvarado.

Alvarado has been carting her pizza truck around Monterey for years, but when it came time to pick a more permanent spot for Tricycle Pizza, she chose Lighthouse Avenue. On Thursday, a big crowd lined up for the grand opening.

“It’s in a very busy corner here just up the street from the Monterey Aquarium and there’s a buzz created around here with a lot of people, a lot of tourists and locals who like to come out and shop and eat some good food,” said Alvarado.

Right between Cannery Row and downtown Monterey, some business owners said the Lighthouse District is often over looked. But with new housing on the way and new restaurants, many hope the area will attract more people.

“Hopefully we will develop into more of a Cannery Row/Alvarado Street destination once people start discovering this Lighthouse District,” said restaurant owner Lenny Leon.

Leon and his business partner Valentina Rapisarda have been feeding the people of Monterey for 12 years, but just opened on Lighthouse in 2015. While parking is an issue, they both feel it’s a growing hot spot.

“It’s becoming a destination. I think once people discover what’s available here on this street then more and more people will come,” said Leon.

And pizza joints like Tricycle Pizza has already brought in a big crowd.

“A lots happening around here and there’s a lot of families with children and that’s who we love to cater to,” said Alvarado.
