Salinas PD out in full force for California Rodeo Salinas

The California Rodeo Salinas brings in people from all over the Country, making it the busiest time of year for the Salinas Police Department.

“A lot of people end of going to parties and bars and drinking a lot. And unfortunately some people make the poor decision to drive after they’ve been drinking,” said Salinas Police Sergeant Gerry Ross.

Driving under the influence is the number one killer on the roadways, with 802 DUI deaths and nearly 24,000 injuries reported statewide. SPD hopes to change that, as additional officers work DUI enforcement this rodeo weekend.

“It’s difficult to find officers to work the DUI patrols, but officers sacrifice their time to help with the safety of a city even though they’re overworked as it is,” said Ross.

All the overtime is paid for by a grant through the California Office of Traffic Safety.

“You’re looking for swerving speeding, running lights. Take a taxi to the bar or to the rodeo. The main thing is plan ahead and know what you’re going to do and have a sober ride to get you home,” said Ross.
