Students learn about healthy eating in SVMH summer program

High school students at Salinas’ Summer Health Institute are sharing their knowledge with kids at the YMCA.

These students are a part of a five-week intensive program through Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System. About 20 students are selected each year, and they get a backstage pass to shadow physicians, nurses and hospital staff.

On Thursday, students taught other kids some easy ways to exercise.

“It’s really hard. I’ve been so tired, but it’s worth it. I think you learn a lot, and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” program participant Jacqueline Leon said.

The program is in its 13th year. SVMH said it continues to attract many ambitious young people.
