Santa Cruz Junior Lifeguard program turns 50

Fifty years ago, something very important happened on Main Beach in Santa Cruz. The Junior Lifeguards had their first graduating class. Many of those kids are now in their mid-50s, maybe a bit older.

Santa Cruz resident Henry Tobias is a Junior Lifeguard Lieutenant, who has been a part of the Junior Lifeguard Program since he first moved to Santa Cruz.

“I’ve lived here since I was six,” he said. “I did little guards, and the program has been a huge part of growing up here.”

The junior lifeguard program stresses discipline, ocean safety, and environmental education. On a summer afternoon, you’ll still find a sea of red bathing suits.

“We have over 1,000 kids registered and participating in our program, doing calisthenics, physical conditioning, and they’re learning to be ocean lifeguards,” said Jill Bates, recreational supervisor..

Starting in 1966 with just 10 kids, the City of Santa Cruz program has grown to become a huge part of the community.

“You know, there are people here — mayors — who have been junior lifeguards. There have been district attorneys, doctors, lawyers, they’ve all started out here,” said Bates.

Sam and Julian are junior lifeguard captains who say they look forward to giving back to the program one day.

Training offers a good workout and a lot of fun, and the program prides itself in building strong individuals both on-and-off the beach.
