Crews call off search for missing swimmer near Sunset Beach

UPDATED: 7/4/2016 9:30 a.m.

According to the Coast Guard a witness said they saw someone go under the water and not come back up on Sunday around 4:00 p.m. The Coast Guard searched for hours by land and air, however no one was found. They also did not find anything to support that anyone was actually missing. On Sunday night the search was indefinitely suspended.

“Units were sent on scene not only by us but by other agencies. They searched the area along with our assets and after many hours we could not find any positive information or new information to continue the search pass sunset and into the next day,” said Coast Guard Lt. Steven Dross.

UPDATED: 9:09 p.m.

Search & Rescue crews have suspended the search because the sun has gone down. They will not be continuing their search in the morning, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Search and rescue crews are looking for a swimmer who disappeared around 4 p.m. Sunday from Sunset State Beach in Watsonville, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard is asking anyone with any information to contact them immediately.
