Police arrest suspect in Soledad Amber Alert

Soledad Police have arrested a man suspected of stealing a car and triggering a statewide Amber Alert.

Police say Carmen Rogelio Maldonado, 27, was located at a remote farm house off River Road in rural South Monterey County and arrested for attempted murder, kidnapping and auto theft.

Maldonado is accused of stealing a car from the driveway of a Soledad home on April 14. A two-year-old boy, Jacob Vargas, was in the car at the time. Police issued an Amber Alert and multiple police agencies conducted an extensive search for the car.

The abandoned car was located that afternoon in a barn off River Road in Gonzales. The boy was found in the car, unharmed.

According to a press release, officers from the Soledad Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Monterey County District Attorney’s Office and Gonzales Police Department located and arrested the suspect
