Crew and cyclist prep for Sea Otter Classic

Crews and cyclists rolled into Laguna Seca to set up and getting ready for the 26th annual Sea Otter Classic.

“It’s the largest biking festival, cycling festival, with multiple disciplines in all of North America for the entire year,” said Duncan Riffle, publicist for Sram and Rock Shox.

The four day event will include 130 different races with more than 10 different disciplines.

“I’ll just rely on my technique and try and do the best I can,” said cyclist Cameron Zink. “But it’s always fun to at least try and make it through a couple of rounds.”

The event is open to all skill levels.

Coordinators told KION they’re pushing to get more young cyclists along with military personnel and women involved.

“For women to get involved in cycling they’re also setting good examples for their kids as well,” said Sea Otter Classic media coordinator Wendy Booher. “So it’s not only affecting one generation or one demographic but many more.”

This year the Sea Otter Classic has added new events to the roster. Cyclists can compete in a recreational gravel ride, a folding and e bike race.

“I think it’s a great thing for the sport and great to get more people on a bike,” said cyclist Brodie Stringer.

The events range from recreational to competitive, but coordinators say safety is always a priority. Support vehicles and course marshals will be on site helping cyclists navigate dangerous intersections and turns.

“The courses will be marked as well,” said Booher.

Cyclists said wearing helmets and staying in their line is a must while riding this week.

“I’ve had too many people get hit by cars,” said Zink.

They’re also asking motorists to abide by current laws which require drivers to either move over three feet or slow down if they are going to pass a bicyclist.

“Stay off the phone, stop texting and give them a couple of feet,” said Zink.
