UPDATE: Monterey County DA seeks murder suspect

UPDATE 4/5/2016 3:40 PM: The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office is now handling the investigation of the March 29 murder of Abigail Chavez of Greenfield.

Greenfield Police handed over the case after obtaining an arrest warrant this morning for 28-year-old Ernesto Hernandez, who police say had a “relationship with the victim.”

District Attorney Dean Flippo tells KION that four investigators are currently working on the case in South Monterey County.

UPDATE 4/4/2016 8:40 PM: The Greenfield Police Department has identified a suspect wanted for murdering a 19-year-old mother of two.

According to police, a warrant for murder has been issued for 28-year-old Ernesto Hernandez of Soledad.

Hernandez was in a relationship with the victim, Abigail Chavez.

Hernandez is 5’9, 150 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He has several tattoos including a large cross below his left eye and a skull and horns on the crown of his head.

He recently bought a black 2012 Volkswagen sedan with license plate number 7CJY378. He may be driving the car.

Police said Hernandez is considered armed and dangerous.

UPDATE 3/30/2016 2:15 PM: Greenfield Police said the person of interest in the deadly shooting of 19-year-old Abigail Gasca Chavez is Abigail’s boyfriend. Police said he’s a known gang member. They also said Chavez did not have a restraining order against him.

Chavez was a mother of two. Police said Chavez and her boyfriend had one child together, a two-year-old.

Police are still searching for her boyfriend.

UPDATE 3/29/16 8:23 PM: A 19-year-old woman was shot and killed in her Greenfield home Tuesday afternoon.

The victim has been identified asAbigail Gasca Chavez.

According to police, Chavez may have been involved in a domestic dispute before she was shot in the head.

Officers are not ruling out gang activity.

The police department is investigating the crime as a murder with a possible connection to domestic violence.

This is the city’s first homicide of the year.
