UPDATE 03/31/2016 10:15PM: Two deadly shootings in less than 48 hours have Greenfield Police busy and residents concerned.
“Enough is enough. No mas, no mas,” said Pua Ernesberg, a Greenfield resident.
Ernesberg said that until this week, it’s been quiet in her small south county city. But Thursday morning, a man in his early 20s was found shot dead near Elm Avenue.
“It’s awful. They need to do something. Stop the violence,” said Ernesberg.
The shooting happened while officers were busy investigating Greenfield’s first homicide of 2016: 19-year-old Abigail Chavez was shot and killed in her home Tuesday, not far from the new crime scene.
“Our resources, as you can imagine in a small agency, we get expended pretty quickly,” said Commander Gregory Allen with the Greenfield Police Department.
With just seventeen sworn officers, Greenfield Police called in the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office to help with both cases. DA investigators are actually the lead on the most recent death. Greenfield Police Chief Adele Frese said other south county police agencies have also offered help.
“People in this county are very caring and they want to help out. The District Attorney’s Office has been very gracious, very forthcoming with assistance,” said Frese.
Still, Ernesberg said, the community needs to help as well.
“We need to take care of business, stand together and unite together as one, clean up this town and we will stand strong,” said Ernesberg.
Investigators said it’s too early to tell if the two shootings are connected.
PREVIOUS STORY: The city of Greenfield recorded its second deadly shooting of the week Thursday morning. At around 10:20 a.m. Greenfield police responded to reports of a shooting and discovered an unidentified male gunshot victim, believed to be in his early 20s.
Police cordoned off an area at the corner of Elm Avenue and Elmwood Drive and ordered several schools in the area into lock down. The lock down order was lifted after 30 minutes.
There are no suspects and the investigation is being handled by the Monterey County District Attorney’s office.
Thursday’s shooting is Greenfield’s second homicide of 2016. On Tuesday, 19-year-old Abigail Gasca Chavez was shot and killed in her home. Investigators say it is too early to say if there is a connection between the two shootings.
