Slow Down! Principal worries about kids and speedy drivers

Speeding has become a big problem at one Santa Cruz elementary school; so much so that the county is installing Radar Speed Feedback Signs and Flashing Beacon systems.

The principal of Del Mar Elementary says she sees that speeding first hand. A cyclist, Principal Marilyn Rockey bikes to school along Portola Drive, one of the roads that will undergo the updates.

Rockey said she’s been very nervous for her scholars, but is excited that change is on the way. Beginning April 4, the Department of Public Works will begin installing the radars and flashing signs on Portola and Felt Street. The work is expected to continue through April 7, and the department is advising the public to avoid the area as delays are expected.
