Weather no match for scholastic surfers in Santa Cruz

A regional surf contest for students took place today at The Hook in Santa Cruz despite choppy surf and windy conditions.

Around 50 surfers between the ages of nine and 18 took part in the National Scholastic Surfing Association Northwest Conference. Janice Aragon with the NSSA says they decided to postpone Sunday’s event until April because of worsening weather conditions.

As for today, Aragon says the area around The Hook is relatively protected and that many of the contestants are from the area and are used to going out in blustery weather.

One 18-year old contestant said it’s hard to surf in mushy, choppy conditions.

Students who belong to the NSSA must maintain their grades to participate.
