More school threats prompt increased security, and safety plan reviews

UPDATE 3/11/2016 3:30 PM: The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a 16-year-old Aptos High School student in connection to the threats.

The threats were sent via Ogle, a social media site.

Detectives arrested the male student at Aptos High School Friday. Detectives say the student was cooperative, and apologetic. He said he was only joking.

The Sheriff’s Office is forwarding the case to the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office.

Detectives say the schools are safe.

ORIGINAL POST: The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is increasing their presence at high school campuses following a threat made at four high schools this week.

The threat warned students to not go to school on Thursday, and referenced gun violence. School officials notified the Sheriff’s Office Wednesday after learning about the threat, which was posted on a social media site.

The Sheriff’s Office discovered the threat was directed at four high schools, including Aptos and Monte Vista High School. While the credibility of the threat was low, deputies are increasing patrols.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the source and working with several schools on safety plans. Anyone with information is asked to call 831-454-7630.
