Maddy Middleton case: Experts weigh in on warning signs

5. with all the sad and troubling news this week.. people we’ve talked to about the case have questions about how such a terrible thing could happen. one of the big questions: were there any signs before gonzalez allegedly raped and murdered the 8-year old girl? one child behavioral expert says yes.. it’s possible. let’s bring in news channel 5’s jake reiner with more… jake? this specialist i spoke to is also an expert on sexual assault– and he told us people who have these desires often are the best at hiding what’s really going on..but he says you also gotta know what to look for.. *trt:outcue::*jr: is it possible that someone could do something really horrific and there be absolutely no signs whatsoever”tom berg: it would be tremendously unlikelyjr: why?tom berg: without knowing a lot of details, i’d say the current case that is happening here in santa cruz, it looks, sounds like it came out fot eh blue, but i will bet you that there is some of ther history in there that we don’t yet know about. this is not something happens because some screw all of a sudden goes loose in a kids head. it’s something builds over time.” tom berg is not connected to the adrian gonzalez murder case– but he is a child behavioral health and sexual assault expert with monterey county. tom: “i tell parents over and over again , you can deal with this now and it causes very little trouble for your child and maybe they’re going to be okay. if you don’t deal with this now and you let it go, when they’re twenty, twenty-five years old and it’s still a problem, you’re going to be visiting them in prison” which could be the outcome for gonzalez–faced with sexual assault and murder charges of 8-year-old maddy middleton–i showed berg–some of gonzalez’s instagram posts to see if there were some red flags…–bite about him standing alone in a field asking about who else feels this way… what about his yo-yoing hobby? tom:”it’s one of those things that would make him seem very normal-it’s probably something he took pride in. but you know it’s something do alone, you don’t need a partner to do that”although these instagram posts don’t tell the whole story–berg says they lay the foundation of what could be a troubling future down the road… berg added that parent’s can’t be vigilant enough when it comes to their child’s odd behavior… he urges
