Big rig catches fire which catches brush on fire

UPDATE 8/4/15 2:00p.m.: CHP officers say the semi truck that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was carrying a trailer loaded with produce headed for Sacramento.

The driver saw the flames coming from the truck and pulled over, that’s when the brush fire started on the side of the highway, northbound 101. Three people were inside the cab of the big rig according to CHP; the 27-year-old driver, his 26-year-old wife and their 8-year-old son.

The driver’s wife was taken to hospital with minor injuries, drugs or alcohol weren’t suspected to be a factor.

Traffic was backed up on north 101 for several miles while crews worked to put out the grass fire and the diesel truck fire.

The big rig crashed just before noon and the engine caught on fire, witnesses are telling CHP that the driver is out of the semi truck, and the truck is fully engulfed in flames.

That fire sparked a fire in the brush around the truck along the off ramp at Boronda.
