UPDATE: Drugs or alcohol not factors in crash killing two Salinas brothers, CHP says

UPDATE 8/3/15: Officers with California Highway Patrol have determined drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash where two brothers from Salinas were killed.

Investigators said Marcelino Garcia Padilla, 16, was driving and his brother Aristeo Garcia Padilla was in the passenger seat.

UPDATE 7/31/15 3:27 p.m.: The California Highway Patrol has identified all three people involved in a deadly crash on Highway 68 Friday morning. Two brothers from Salinas killed in the crash were Marcelino Garcia Padilla, 16, and Aristeo Garcia Padilla, 20, according to CHP.

Officers said Samuel Glen Mayhew, 62, was sent to the hospital with major injuries.

UPDATE 7/31/15 2:26 p.m.: Two brothers headed to work at an agricultural field died in a crash on Highway 68 Friday morning, according to California Highway Patrol.

Officers said the crash happened at Foster Rd. as the brothers, 16 and 20, were driving in a Toyota Celica just after 6 a.m.

For an unknown reason, officers said the brothers made an unsafe turn and lost control of the car, spun out and traveled into the eastbound lanes crashing into a Chevrolet Sonic. Officers said the Celica caught on fire when it came to a stop. Both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP said the 62-year-old driver in the Sonic was taken to Natividad Medical Center where he is being treated for major injuries.

Traffic was diverted onto Reservation Rd. for about three and a half hours. The crash is still under investigation and officers said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

Two Salinas brothers killed in fiery crash on Highway 68

UPDATE 7/31/15 9:41 a.m.: CHP says all lanes have just re-opened on Highway 68 near Spreckels Friday morning after a double fatal accident blocked the highway during most of the morning commute.

“It looks like right now that the white Toyota was going west bound away from Salinas and for some reason, lost control of the vehicle and started sliding sideways and it crossed over into the eastbound lanes where the dark colored Chevrolet was traveling,” said Sgt. Peter Sisson.

The accident happened right before 6:00 a.m. prompting detours and delays. The two people inside the white Toyota were trapped inside the car as it was engulfed in flames, they died died on scene.

UPDATE 7/31/15 8:00 a.m.: Lanes are expected to reopen in about an hour. Please continue to use alternate routes. CHP says the two people trapped inside the burning vehicle are the ones who died. They say initial investigation shows a white toyota may have been the one at fault.

PREVIOUS STORY: Right now all lanes on East Bound Highway 68 near Spreckels are closed, due to a fatal car accident.

The California Highway Patrol confirms two people have died and one vehicle is on fire. We are still learning more about the details of this accident.

CHP is asking all drivers to find an alternate route and to drive safety.
