Monterey house uninhabitable after fire breaks, firefighters said

With a quick response from fire crews, firefighters were able to quickly put out a fire they believe started in a bedroom, and prevent it from spreading to the rest of the house Saturday morning, according to Monterey Fire Department.

Just after 10:00 a.m., the crews of five fire engines, including one from the Seaside Fire Department, responded to a fire on the 200 block of John Street.

Firefighters arrived quickly and found heavy fire coming from a bedroom area. They were able to put it out in seven minutes, firefighters said.

Three adults and an infant were inside the house when the fire broke out. One of them suffered first and second degree burns to his hands after he tried to smother the fire with a pillow, fire officials said. The homeowner managed to close the bedroom door which firefighters said, not only helped keep the fire from spreading, but “helped fire needs.”

Firefighters said the house is uninhabitable.

PG&E crews are on scene to help with the investigation.
